This was my weekend.

I've been busy, but I still feel like I have nothing much to talk about.

I just spend the weekend with my grandfather, and a few nights with my mother. It was nice to spend a bunch of time with family, but so much nicer to get home to my own bed and my own routine. It's hard with a baby on the road. But it WAS nice having someone to watch Chloe so I could run to the store alone and spend a couple of hours one evening with a friend.

My sister and nephew are currently staying with me while they look for an apartment. They're a bit of a handful but the first 24 hours haven't been too horrible. I'm not sure how much longer until I go crazy though.

I'm going to work tomorrow for one shift again. It's in the morning, which is hard on the head since I'm used to only getting up a couple of hours later with Chloe, but I look forward to it. It's some extra spending cash, and my sister is a free babysitter.

Today is also the day I get my taxes done (hopefully). I'm praying I get oodles and oodles of money back. Wish me luck.

Tell me about your weekend.

My life, lately

Blogging... I just haven't been feeling it lately.

Writing, or reading.

But I do check almost daily to see if any of my favorite people (you guys) have written.

Some of you have been slacking too. It makes me feel better.

So what have I been up to?

Saturday I went to the Paul Brandt concert. I may have had a drink before, and a drink during the concert. I may have giggled and made inappropriate comments the entire first couple of hours of the concert with Sarah. I may have thought that Paul Brandt talked a bit too much, taking up precious singing time. The concert really was great though.  The rest of the night was spent just lazing around the hotel room with a couple of drinks, and quite a few laughs. An all-around good night.

The first part of Sunday was spent... feeling like I consumed some alcohol Saturday night, a feeling I don't get very often these days. Luckily, my sister wasn't asking me to pick up Chloe yet so I got to lay around and watch tv with E. for a couple of hours before he took me (and his daughter) to pick her up. By the time he was dropping me off at home we had two babies having a meltdown in the car and I had been falling asleep most of the way home. I was in bed as soon as possible, and luckily me and Chloe both had a great night's sleep.

I made a last minute decision Monday to go to Mom's for a couple of nights. My nephew B. stayed with us the Monday night, and we all went to visit Pepe today. It was a nice visit. I wish it wasn't a two hour drive to visit him, but that's so close compared to how far apart some people live from their family.

I'm still at Mom's now, about 10 seconds away from going to sleep, but I'm heading home tomorrow. More because I didn't pack a lot of formula for the baby than because I want to go home.

And well, that's more or less a recap of what I've been up to lately.

I don't know why, but I just don't have it in me to blog much these days.

Amazing people in my life

People are amazing. Sometimes we get caught up in the hate, the gossip, the drama and forget. But I've been reminded constantly lately how amazing people are.

Like my Mom, who always seems to sense when I'm the most stressed out and tells me to come stay at her place for a couple of nights. Mom, who will sleep on the pull-out couch to stay with Chloe so I can get a full night's sleep alone in the spare room. Mom's who's bought me so many things I've needed lately but couldn't afford. Mom who stayed with us when I got out of the hospital and took care of Chloe, cooked meals, bought groceries, did the dishes, scrubbed floors and made my recovery so much easier.

And Chloe's other grandmother who is very nice about babysitting when I need her help.

And there's my grandfather - who can't speak very many coherent words, but still his face lights up every time he sees me and Chloe. My grandfather who made it clear that he wants to buy us a stroller for Christmas because we don't have one yet.

And when I had my toothache and didn't have enough money to cover my emergency appointment, both Mom's boyfriend and my friend S. immediately offered to lend me the money.

S. who bailed me out when I got my flat tire, the day before my birthday. Who, as a birthday present, fixed all the things wrong with my car. S. who offers to come visit just to do my dishes and help me clean when I feel like I can't keep up. S. who altered Chloe's Halloween costume so she'd have something that fit. S. who's helped me out so much lately that I can't even begin to list it all.

A. who, without me asking, got in contact with a nurse to find out what to do if Chloe didn't poop when I switched her to formula, and immediately called to tell me what they said. A, who lives too far away to physically be here but lets me know that she would do anything she could.

S. who had all kinds of presents and cards for me and Chloe for my birthday, Halloween, and Chloe's birth.

And C., who is the sister of a friend of mine, who called me yesterday to say they had some baby clothes given to them and thought of me to give them to.

Yeah, there are a ton of amazing people in my life. My only complaint is that most of them live too far away.

Family Dinner

Friday was my brother and sister's birthday. Yeah, they're twins.

We had plans for a family dinner at mother's, which got thrown off when I got my first bunch of contractions and mother came up here in case I was really in labor. But then she got up here and they weren't really happening anymore. I helped her shop for a dress to wear to a wedding, to get me walking around and maybe keep the contractions coming. No luck. They went away, and she went home.

We still went up to her place (me, brother and his girlfriend) to have dinner at Pizza Delight with mother, sister and nephew. It was nice to get everyone together, but insanely loud. My brother, sister and nephew don't have an indoor voice. My sister yells out things in the restaurant about have some kind of male hormones and that's why she has so much body hair. And other random semi-embarrassing things that you don't want the family of 5 next to us to be listening to.

But it was still a good time. Brother talked too much about lifting weights. Sister stuck her hands in everyone's food. Nephew ate a lemon. Nothing out of the ordinary.

And the restaurant had the worst lighting ever, so all the photos are in black and white.

What's it like when your family gets together? Is yours loud and embarrassing like mine or do you sit and have regular conversation at regular noise levels?

Everyone Loves a Man in Uniform

I don't talk about my siblings very much on here. Well they're all kinds of crazy. I know I mentioned before that they are boy/girl twins. They are now 19.

But you probably didn't know how awesome little brother is. He's got plenty of moments where you want to punch him. You wouldn't really feel bad about it because he's always picking on people and he could handle it. He's a tough one. How tough? Well, he's in the Corrections Officer program. He's been pepper sprayed, overworked, and been put through all kinds of pain. I guess it's finally all paid off though, because Friday morning was his graduation. It was a proud day for all of us.

It was fun to see them march in and not move a muscle until they were told. I'd never seen him in action before, or in his uniform so it was nice to get to see all that.

The ceremony was kept nice and short. There's nothing worst than a guest speaker that goes on forever like some that I've been to. It was slow getting through all the graduates, but that was because they didn't rush them through by calling the next name almost immediately, and they let them pause for as long as the family needed to get pictures.

I, on the other hand, only got one good photo while brother was up there because he hates pictures and didn't wait very long. He's lucky I managed the one good photo! Although it's obvious how nervous he was.

Right after the ceremony, everyone left the theater and went to the school where they marched, and got their final inspection. Also fun to watch.

Then they were free to throw off their hats and take some photos.

Me and little brother (is it just me or is my face starting to look 'fuller'?)

Mother and brother

Brother & friend

Brother and his girlfriend

There are a few more awesome photos but I posted them all on my photography blog and would love it so much if you would go look at them : )

For it being a short graduation and a short after-party, it was a good time. Nice to see little brother in action, and finally get some outdoor use out of my camera and new lens.

So congrats little brother, and sorry that I forgot to give you your card.

There was no white Christmas

We were dreaming of a white Christmas, but we got a completely green one. The white part got started on Boxing Day, putting an end to plans I had with all my friends who all live away, but come back home for Christmas.

After the 'white' we got a lot of rain, followed by another snow storm. I was dreaming of a white Christmas. It doesn't mean I was dreaming of a white new year, Mother Nature.

Has anyone ever worn plastic bags over their socks to escape from wet boots/shoes? Yeah, that was me tonight.

Snow is pretty and can be fun and all, but I'm a summer girl.

I haven't felt much like blogging lately - reading or writing.

I guess I'm just tired of reading about Christmas. Writing about Christmas. Seeing pictures of Christmas trees. I am the Grinch, just a few days past the actual date. (Note: if you're reading this, I probably don't mean you - I've been looking forward to reading about a few of your Christmases!)

But one last Christmas thing? Part of my Christmas gifts were gift cards to my favorite store. I ended up buying two dresses. This is the one I think I'll be wearing to my work Christmas party in January (who has a Christmas party in January, anyway?):

It looks darker in person. The second dress is a bit shorter and the material is a little light so you see the space between my legs when I'm wearing it. You can't see right through it but still, it is a little weird. I will need to find something to wear underneath it, but I think it will be my New Year's Eve dress. I couldn't find an exact picture but it's a basic one-shoulder black dress, somewhat like this:

Just minus the bedazzling on the shoulder and the way it seems to cris-cross in the front a little. It is a tiny bit longer, as well.

But that is my excitement lately, plus being sent home from work last night because the boss accidentally scheduled two of us to work the same night and no one noticed until we both showed up. It's nice to have an extra night off.

As for my Christmas, maybe I should mention it a little. It was just nice to see my nephew so excited about all of his toys. He got a ton of toys and once he opened one he didn't care at all about the others. It was also nice spending time with my grandfather. He seemed happy to just be hanging out with the family. He kept saying "J'aime ca." which is basically him saying he loves this, in French. Did I mention before that he speaks a little bit more, only it's all in French? Any improvement makes me happy though.

Now tell me, what was the highlight of your Christmas?

Christmas 2010

Christmas day was a good one. We went to my sister's house to open presents, then have turkey lunch. After that, off we went to my aunt and uncle's house for turkey supper, and to give my grandfather his presents. It was a day filled with lots of family and lots of fun.

As usual, I videotaped Christmas for the 6th (?) year in a row. I'm getting a little sick of watching Christmas through a camera.

It was this little boy's third Christmas. He was pretty excited to get so many toys. He is beyond spoiled.

My grandfather seemed pretty happy with his presents as well. He's still not talking very much, but he seemed happy just to be with the family.

Little B. danced around for us while my cousin sang and played guitar. It really felt like a country Christmas.

Hope you all had a fantastic Christmas like I did.

My Family

Day 03 – Your Family

I have what you would call one of those dysfunctional families. I am the oldest child in my family. My mother and had me in 1987 with my biological father, R. In 1991, R had another daughter with his current wife. So I have one half-sister.

My mother also gave birth in 1991, to a set of boy and girl twins, with her then boyfriend, J.

J also has a daughter and son from a previous relationship, who are both just a little bit older than me. There are half brother and sisters everywhere in my family.

I have no full brothers or sisters.

I grew up living with the twins. I don't really consider them to be half brother and sister, even though they are. I don't consider my nephew to be my half nephew. Family is family.

Anyone else have one of those hard to explain families?

My grandfather, not part of the craziness, but still family.

Day 01 – Introduce yourself
Day 02 – Your first love

The Day Everything Changed

Me and my mother were talking a few days ago about how she has the phone ringer off in her room, because she doesn't want the phone to take her up in the middle of the night. If there's a phone call in the middle of the night, it's always something bad. And what are you supposed to do in the middle of the night? Her theory is you might as well face tragedy with a good night's sleep, because you won't be sleeping much after you find out.

My opinion is, what if the tragedy is preventable, but you didn't hear the phone and then it's too late? It's just too bad that the phone ringing out in the kitchen is enough to wake me up from a deep sleep.

I went to bed sometime close to 2:00 a.m. on November 25th. I couldn't see the clock when the phone woke me up. I took one look in the direction of my window to see that it was still dark out. Too early for someone to be calling to chat. Whoever it was hung up as soon as I got to the phone. My first thought was to actually check the time. It was somewhere around 5 a.m. I was ready to barge into my mother's phone to get the phone that has caller ID when the phone started ringing again.

I didn't know who it was at first. I don't remember much of the conversation. Just the words "He's okay, but Pepe had a stroke." Pepe is my grandfather. It was my uncle on the phone. He asked if my mother was home, then started explaining to me what happened but I couldn't listen. I went and got Mom.

Before 6 a.m., we had both called work and were on our way to the hospital - two hours away.

Most people said he was fine earlier that night, when he was at Bingo. A couple of people who saw him in the day said he seemed a little quieter, but no one noticed anything really wrong. He drove home after Bingo. When Mom was in his house, it was obvious that he was getting ready to go to bed when he figured out something was wrong. His bed was pulled down, like someone was about to get in it, but hadn't actually gotten in the bed. The blind was down, and we all know he always makes his bed and pulls up his blind in the morning.

Sometime between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. he took a mild stroke.

He walked over a small ditch to his neighbors house, where his brother's wife still lives, to knock on her door. She thought he was drunk, and wouldn't let him in. She called Pepe's sister who lives across the street, who picked him up, realized something was wrong, and called an ambulance.

We don't want to think of what would've happened if he had been driving, or if he hadn't left the house to find help. He lives alone and no one would've thought to check on him until he didn't show up at Bingo the next day at dinner time.

When me and Mom got to the hospital he seemed excited to see us. His right arm and leg were a little weak. His speech was bad. The only words he could say were his curse words like "God Damn", "Oh Shit", "Lord!" It was sad, but hard not to laugh when he tried to talk. He was laughing too. He tried to talk to us but couldn't. We got him water, but he didn't want help drinking it at all. He spilled some of it fighting to hold it himself, and spilled more when he tried to drink it.

They took him (and me!) to a town an hour away to get a catscan done. My mother, uncle, cousin, and great-uncle all came. It was a long wait, but the test results were good. He didn't need any kind of surgery. It was confirmed that it was a mild stoke. Just a blockage, not bleeding, which is better I guess. They say he won't be able to drive again. He probably won't be able to live alone again.

I'm trying not to think of the future because I don't know what's going to happen to him.

He was always really active. He got up early in the morning, went down to the little convenience store for some daily old man gossip, worked at the Community Hall, fixed up my car, chopped wood, visited family, walked, and went to Bingo every night. He was always busy. He won't like another lifestyle, we don't think, but he's been in a great mood throughout the past couple of days. Always laughing and being playful, even though we don't understand much of what he says, and he doesn't understand us much.

He got sent back to his local hospital for the night. Me and Mom spent the night with him. He hadn't slept more than an hour in almost two days, but he still didn't seem to sleep well. He ate great though. He ate by himself, and did it very quickly. Everytime someone new would stop by to visit, he would get excited, and it really seemed like he knew who they were. He talks better on the phone too.

He got moved to the city that I live in (two hours away) because he got a room in with the stroke team where he'll have therapy 5 days a week.

I got to stop in and see him (after visiting hours were over!) last night for a little while. He was doing better. Tracing letters and drawing shapes, when earlier that morning he didn't know what to do with the pen. We put him to sleep, and this time he fell right to sleep, and was snoring, then me, Mom, and sister went home.

I felt sad, thinking he might wake up alone and wonder where everyone went, but Mom was up and gone back to the hospital by the time I got up at 7:20 for work.

As long as I don't think about it too much, I don't get too sad. I'm just happy he's okay.

That, and besides not being able to say many words that make sense, he's acting almost the exact same as he always was.

My Father Figure

I just found this photo today. I love it.

It is the photo of the most amazing man in my life - my grandfather, and someone I wish I had the chance to get to know better - my grandmother. My facts might be a little off, but my grandfather was born in 1938, married my grandmother in 1958, and my mother was born in 1968.

My mother was the youngest of 4, and the only girl. I was the third grandchild born, and the first girl. So I was special.

Mom was living at home when she had me. My grandfather (Pepe) always never let me go cold - the furnace was always pumping out plenty of heat. To this day if I mention being cold he will almost immediately head downstairs and light the wood stove. Now that's love.

I was beyond spoiled by them. I even lived with them for a little while, to help my Mom out. I was in kindergarten, and Mom had just had my brother and sister, the twins. And at this point she was only 23 - the same age I am now. Crazy.

They would take me to visit Mom and I would want to cry when we left. Later on, when I was back home with Mom, I remember wanting to cry every time we left after visiting the grandparents.

I was 6 when my grandmother (Meme) died. It would've been June 1994. She had Cancer.  I wasn't too affected when she died, since I was so young, but I remember feeling sad. It made me especially sad seeing all my family crying at the funeral. Pepe didn't cry though.

Meme was the glue that kept our family together. I wish I had more memories with her, but I don't really have any. I hear she was an amazing woman though.

Mom sent me to stay with Pepe that following Christmas. He didn't want anyone around, but Mom didn't want him alone. She thought he would feel better having me there. I don't remember much about this Christmas at all though.

Once of my strongest memories (from shortly after my grandmother's death) was talking to Pepe on the phone, and him crying. It breaks my heart just to think of it now, 16 years later.

As the years went on, Pepe was always the one to buy me things I really wanted, and give me money on random occasions. A big deal to a kid. He was the one who gave us our first computer.

He was the one who drove me to my orthodontist appointments 2 hours from home. He had money saved for me for when I went to college. He helped me out with rent or bills anytime I needed it. He always gave more than asked. He's the one who worries if my car isn't working right. Who reminds me when I need something renewed for my car. He makes me feel more secure.

I'm finally able to (mostly) support myself on my own now, and only need his help for surprise expenses - like car troubles - but I know he would help me out in an instant if needed.

He really is the father figure in my life. I never would've made where I am right now without him. He is the most important man in my life and I don't know what I would do without him.

Fun fact: His wardrobe is full of shirts with funny sayings on them. Photo above: "Excuse me but do I look like someone who cares?"

Saturday Photoshoot

Saturday I met my brother and sister and their family (they are my half siblings so they have a different father, plus some other half siblings of their own) and took some family photos for them. I think they turned out pretty well, most of them, despite the sun in everyone's eyes and the 2 and a half year old who didn't want to cooperate for most of the photos.

All the kids

My siblings' half sister and brother, and their mother

Left to right: My sister, her father, her half sister (who, oddly enough, has the same name as me). In the middle is my nephew.

My sister and nephew

Overall it was a fun experience and I hope to get to take more pictures soon. I've barely taken any lately.

Weekend Recap -{ Lots of Photos }

I made it back, and I'm already dying for a day off. Normally I'd be fine with working, but I've got some crazy shifts coming up. Like tomorrow when I work 7am-2, then 4-midnight. Then Friday when I have to do groceries and still be at work for 11am. I've worked two shifts and I need a break already!

I had a great time home visiting family and a friend. I got to go to a dance with M. One of those back-home type things where everyone knows everyone, the liquor is cheaper and the band is great. I had a lot of fun.

The best part of the weekend was spending so much time with the little nephew. He's such a cutie. And lately he's had an obsession with tractors, so he loved playing in my grandfather's.

I've never seen a kid so excited about something.

He loved rolling down the hill in the front yard.

That same day, most of the family headed down to the beach and boardwalk to take some pictures. It was a really pretty day, but the wind got my hands pretty cold when I was taking all the pictures.

This is my brother and his girlfriend. He was not happy about taking pictures.

She's so pretty

 Nephew, brother, and I

Brother, mother and me. Just missing sister.

Me and the love of my life

Yours truly

I'll just finish off with that adorable happy face. I have a million other great ones that I'd like to post, but I'll save those for another day.

I've been reading blogs a bit over the weekend, and some tonight but it takes no time at all to fall behind. And I love reading each and every post from the blogs I follow, I just have to skip the responding sometimes. I love reading blog posts more than I like making them. Is anyone else like that?

I got my hair highlighted yesterday morning before I came back to town. I love LOVE it, but my camera batter died and the cord is still lost in the luggage I brought with me, so no pictures yet.

Hope you're having a great week and aren't as busy as I am!
Starting to miss the boyfriend.
